Electrical hazards cause 24,000 home fires annually in the US. Here's your simple checklist to keep your family safe—no electrical expertise required.

Monthly Checks (5 Minutes)

Test All GFCI Outlets

Press the "TEST" button on GFCI outlets (bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors). Power should cut off immediately. Press "RESET" to restore power. If it doesn't trip, call an electrician—it's not protecting you.

Check for Warm Outlets or Switches

Lightly touch outlets and light switches. They should be cool or room temperature. Warm or hot = loose wiring or overload. Call an electrician immediately.

Inspect Cords for Damage

Look at power cords for appliances, lamps, and electronics. Replace any cords with: fraying, exposed wires, cracks, or burn marks. Never tape damaged cords—replace them.

Check Smoke & CO Detectors

Press the test button on all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. You should hear a loud beep. Replace batteries if they chirp or fail the test.

Seasonal Checks (Every 6 Months)

Review Electrical Panel

Open your electrical panel and look for:

  • ❌ Rust, corrosion, or moisture
  • ❌ Burning smell or scorch marks
  • ❌ Breakers that trip frequently
  • ❌ Buzzing or humming sounds

Any of these = call an electrician same day.

Test Arc Fault (AFCI) Breakers

AFCI breakers have a "TEST" button on them (usually in bedrooms and living areas). Push the button—the breaker should trip. Reset it by flipping it fully off, then back on.

Clean Dryer Vent & Outlet

Dryer lint buildup causes 15,000+ fires per year. Clean the lint trap after every load, and vacuum behind the dryer every 6 months. Check that the outlet plug fits snugly (no wiggling).

Everyday Safety Habits

✅ DO

  • ✓ Unplug appliances when not in use (hair tools, phone chargers)
  • ✓ Use surge protectors for expensive electronics
  • ✓ Keep electrical devices away from water
  • ✓ Replace smoke detectors every 10 years
  • ✓ Use the correct wattage bulbs in lamps
  • ✓ Hire licensed electricians for repairs

❌ DON'T

  • ✗ Overload outlets with splitters and multi-plugs
  • ✗ Run cords under rugs or furniture
  • ✗ Use extension cords as permanent wiring
  • ✗ Remove the ground pin (3rd prong) from plugs
  • ✗ DIY electrical work without a license
  • ✗ Ignore flickering lights or burning smells

Warning Signs: Call an Electrician Immediately

  • Flickering or dimming lights (especially when appliances turn on)
  • Breakers that trip repeatedly (more than once a month)
  • Burning smell from outlets, switches, or panel
  • Sparks when plugging in or unplugging devices
  • Buzzing, sizzling, or crackling sounds from outlets or switches
  • Discolored or scorched outlets or switch plates
  • Shocks or tingles when touching appliances or switches
  • Two-prong outlets throughout the house (no grounding = unsafe)

🚨 These are fire and shock hazards. Don't wait—call a licensed electrician today.

Child Safety: Kid-Proofing Electrical Hazards

  • 🔌 Outlet covers: Use tamper-resistant outlets (code-required in new homes) or plug covers for unused outlets
  • 📱 Cord management: Keep charging cables and cords out of reach of babies and toddlers
  • 🔒 Secure heavy items: Anchor TVs and furniture to prevent tip-overs that can pull cords
  • 🚿 Bathroom safety: Never use hair dryers, straighteners, or electronics near water
  • 🎄 Holiday lights: Inspect lights for damage yearly and use timers to auto-shutoff

When to Schedule a Professional Inspection

Buying or Selling a Home

Always get a full electrical inspection. Hidden issues like aluminum wiring or outdated panels are expensive surprises.

Every 10 Years

Even if everything seems fine, get a comprehensive safety inspection. Wiring degrades over time.

Before Major Renovations

Adding a room, kitchen, or bathroom? Make sure your panel can handle the additional load.

Installing an EV Charger

EV chargers draw massive power. You need a load calculation to ensure your system is safe.
